If you’ve looked around this website you will now know that technically snoring is considered a sleeping disorder, but that it is a common problem that many people suffer from.
There are many remedies available these days designed to cure snoring, but some of them are very expensive and others are potentially risky. The question of how to prevent snoring is increasingly being answered with a number of medical procedures.
Mouthpieces and surgery are often seen as the answer of how to prevent snoring, and we’ll discuss these and other options in this article.
With regards to surgery, one problem for people who snore is that both of these aforementioned solutions can be both uncomfortable and expensive. Now of course, you would need to discuss these options with your doctor in order to get an expert’s opinion on whether or not it is advisable to go down this route.
Alternatively, before even considering these drastic measures to prevent snoring, you could look at trying some natural remedies which can work pretty effectively. Some people are known to have a lot of success preventing snoring with home cures and slightly unorthadox methods.
Opening Airways
Nasal congestion is seen as a major reason that people snore. It makes sense, as often snoring is a sign of breathing difficulties and some people who do not normally snore, do snore when they have a cold for example.
So how can you prevent yourself snoring if you are suffering from nasal congestion? Well, one thing you can try is to avoid certain foods before you go to sleep. Try not to eat anything that is a high in fat dairy product, like cheese for example. Milk drinks that are full of fat will also clog up your nasal passages, and should also be avoided.
You should also avoid full fat soymilk products. Either cut out these drinks or drink skimmed milk or non-fat alternatives. One thing that I have mentioned several times on this site is that you should also avoid drinking alcohol before bedtime. I have mentioned it several times because it is a common cause of snoring, as it relaxes the muscles in the throat too much and leaves you snoring loudly.
You can also inhale steam before you go to sleep to help open up your airways. Putting a little essential oil in your steam inhaler will also help. If you don’t have a steam inhaler you could try putting a towel over your head and inhaling steam from a bowl of hot water.
How to prevent snoring can also be solved with essential oils, but without the steam. You can simply buy a jar of marjoram oil and leave it open in your room at night.
Alternatively, you can place one or two drops below the nostrils which should help you breathe more easily.
Some aromatherapy experts will help you to blend specific essential oils together for this purpose, if you ask their advice on how to prevent snoring using their oils and products.
And finally, changing the pillows in your bedroom might also help prevent snoring. Try to sleep either without a pillow (which can be quite difficult to begin with) or get a firmer pillow.
There are even pillows specially designed for snorers. Alternatively you can change the angle of your mattress to elevate the head of the bed. You can do this by placing rolled up towels underneath the head of your mattress.
