People who don’t take snoring seriously often end up making jokes about their condition and do not even consider snoring prevention, as they do not think there is a problem. However it should be known that night time snoring could be a sign of a common sleep disorder, or in extreme cases be caused by something potentially serious.

Snoring can also lead to lots of tension in the bedroom, especially if snoring tends to wake up your partner. In many cases, snoring is so problematic that it has lead to couples being driven apart, so emphasis must be placed on just how serious this condition is.

To help people get over this snoring problem, there are many over the counter cures that you can buy. Before actually considering buying these cures, it may be better to do a mini self analysis, as adapting and putting into place some lifestyle changes could induce snoring prevention without the need for medication. It is always advisable to take a look at your habits too, as this may help you to understand the cause of snoring and therefore learn how snoring prevention could be achieved by identifying the areas to focus on in your lifestyle or habits.

Healthy Habits

If you have put on weight recently and find that your snoring is worse than usual then it could be that the two may be related. In fact, obesity and being overweight in general can contribute greatly to snoring, because too much throat tissue or floppy throat tissue can  lead to problems with breathing, and therefore snoring. One way to overcome this complication is of course by exercising more and adjusting your diet. In other words, losing weight can help with snoring prevention, pure and simple.

Smoking is bad for you; everyone knows that and now you have yet another reason to quit. Smoking or even being exposed to second hand cigarette smoke can be a root cause of severe breathing problems. A lot of smokers experience lung and nasal congestion and this is further complicated by the fact that smoking relaxes the throat muscles, which can in many cases result in snoring. Giving up smoking can therefore have numerous benefits, as clearer airways and nasal passages can help with snoring prevention by improving breathing, not to mention the lack of chemicals and nicotine in the system helping to improve a person’s overall health.

Excessive alcohol consumption is another reason that can cause people to snore. So if you have a problem with snoring, it is better to avoid drinking alcohol before bedtime and avoid excessive drinking at all costs. If you have to drink alcohol immediately before you go to sleep limit yourself to one or two drinks at most. It is a common myth and misconception that drinking can help you sleep. It may ‘knock you out’, however you do not get the quality of sleep that your body requires. You will find that cutting down on your alcohol intake not only helps greatly with snoring prevention but also ensures that your overall sleep quality improves.

Sleeping Pills and Snoring

If you are or indeed you know someone who has trouble getting to sleep and is therefore taking sleeping pills, this could very well be the cause of snoring. The reason for this is that sleeping pills can sedate the muscles in the throat, making them go lax and eventually causing you to start snoring.

In addition to all of these factors above, just the way that you sleep can have an affect on snoring prevention, or even curing the problem of snoring. It is widely believed that lying on your back tends to encourage snoring whilst lying on your side can help with snoring prevention.

The fact is that it can be difficult to sleep on your side if you are used to sleeping on your back, as it means a change in routine and one that is not easy to implement. There are some weird and wonderful ways to train yourself to sleep on your side, one being to place a tennis ball in a sock and pin it to the back of your pajamas. This way whenever you sleep on your back you will be prevented from sleeping and it will encourage you start sleeping on your side.
